Why your shop isn't showing up on Google Maps, and how to fix it

First, check whether you're missing or just ranking low
Search your exact shop name on Google Maps. If nothing shows up, you have a listing problem. If you show up for your name but not for "auto repair near me" or "brake shop" in your town, you have a ranking problem. They have different fixes.
If your shop doesn't show up at all
- The profile isn't claimed or verified. Go to Google Business Profile, search for your shop and claim it. Verification can take a little time, so start now.
- The listing was suspended. This sometimes happens after an address change or a name edit that looks like keyword stuffing. Check your profile dashboard for a notice.
- There's a duplicate. An old listing from a previous owner or an earlier address can confuse Google. Report duplicates and ask for them to be merged or removed.
If you show up, but not for the searches that matter
This is the more common situation. A few things to look at:
- Primary category. "Auto repair shop" is usually the right primary category for a general repair shop. If you mainly do one thing, like transmissions, brakes or tires, choose the category that fits best, then add secondary categories for the rest.
- Services listed. Google lets you add specific services to your profile. Add the work you actually do: oil change, brake repair, check engine light diagnostics, state inspection, alignment, AC repair.
- Name, address and phone consistency. Your shop's name, address and phone should be identical on Google, your website, Yelp, Facebook and any directories. Old numbers and old suite numbers cause problems.
- Hours. Wrong or missing hours can hurt you, especially when someone searches while you're actually open.
- Reviews. Shops with more recent reviews tend to look more relevant and more trustworthy. Ask every satisfied customer.
- A website. Linking your profile to a real website that lists your services and location gives Google more reason to show you.
Things that don't help
- Stuffing keywords into your business name, like "Joe's Auto Repair Brakes Oil Change Cheap." It can get your listing suspended.
- Using a PO box or a home address you don't serve customers from.
- Buying reviews or offering discounts for them. That's against Google's policies and can get reviews removed.
Distance still matters
Google weighs how close a shop is to the person searching. You can't move your building, so you won't show up for every search across town. What you can control is being the most complete, accurate and well-reviewed shop in your immediate area.
A quick monthly checklist
- Hours still correct, including holidays
- New photos of the shop, bays or finished work
- Every review answered, good or bad
- Services list matches what you actually offer
- Website link works and the site loads on a phone
The bottom line
Most Maps problems come down to an unverified listing, the wrong category, mismatched details or no website behind the profile. Fix the basics, keep reviews coming, and keep everything consistent.
Frequently asked questions
- How long does it take to show up on Google Maps after verifying?

- Can I list my shop under more than one category?
- Yes. Pick one primary category that best fits your main work, then add secondary categories for other services.
- Does having a website help my Maps ranking?
- It helps Google understand your services and location, and it gives searchers a reason to choose you.
